Chinese Teacher – Leave Replacement – August 2024 through mid-March 2025 Full time or Part time (Brooklyn, New York 11201)

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: CHINESE TEACHER
Leave Replacement for August 2024 through mid-March 2025
Full time or Part time

Saint Ann’s School, an independent, non-sectarian day school serving Pre-Kindergarten through High School is hiring a full-time or part-time Chinese teacher. We seek someone who is both a passionate teacher and learned scholar, someone thrilled to share that passion with students ranging from seventh through twelfth grade, and who aims to teach in a flexible, creative environment. Teachers at Saint Ann’s enjoy a great deal of freedom in the classroom and are encouraged to introduce their own scholarly interests to their students within the parameters of the curriculum.

Saint Ann’s teachers are committed to working with students from various backgrounds. Applicants must be committed to meeting students’ individual needs, and also invested in advancing the School’s DEIB work, which includes continuous scrutiny of texts, program design, and pedagogical practices, adapting to what the students present in a given moment and over time.

We do not give grades. Instead, twice a year teachers write full-page reports on each student’s progress. This is a big task and not for a reluctant writer, but teachers who invest in our written reports find such descriptions more fruitful and productive than grades. An equitable and individualized approach to evaluating students is expected.

Extensive knowledge in Chinese language, literature, and culture is required, though significant self-study is taken as seriously as advanced degrees. Some experience working with children is helpful, though teaching experience is not a requirement.

ABOUT SAINT ANN’S SCHOOL

Since its founding in 1965, Saint Ann’s has embraced a commitment to education for its own sake, oriented to the capacities of each individual student and free of the encumbrances of formal grading, prizes, and rankings. At the same time, we are unabashedly committed to excellence in all that we do. With a faculty and staff numbering close to 400, and nearly 1100 students, Saint Ann’s is among the largest and most selective independent schools in New York City. The lives of our graduates speak powerfully to the potential of an education based on these principles to ignite a love of learning and sustain creative energy in every field of endeavor. We accomplish this by bringing together talented teachers with creative and motivated students. Saint Ann’s is committed to centering anti-racism in the life of the school. Seeking to create a community rooted in trust and equity, we invite each other to take risks, pursue knowledge, and celebrate growth.
