Chinese Language Assistant (Waterville, Maine, USA)

Colby College seeks a Chinese Language Assistant for the 2026-2027 school year beginning on Sept. 1 2026, with the possibility of renewal for another year.
Qualifications:
B.A. in Chinese or a language education-related field
Preferably current Master’s students or recent graduates
Proficiency in English
Experience teaching Chinese as a second language (University-level and North American context preferred)
Responsibilities:
The Chinese Language Assistant is expected to work 20 hours a week. Duties include conversation classes, Chinese tutorial coordination, and extracurricular activities.

Conversation Classes
The language assistant will teach three conversation classes and/or work with independent study students; they will also hold two office hours a week in support of this teaching. The three conversation classes are at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, occurring 50 minutes a week, usually in small groups, with no homework or tests. All teaching will be done under the supervision of a Chinese language faculty member. Teaching responsibilities are subject to change based on the assistant’s experience and program needs.

Chinese Tutorial Coordination
The language assistant will assist a faculty member in coordinating the weekly Chinese tutorial sessions, taking the role of a head tutor and helping with tutor training.

Extracurricular Activities
The language assistant will organize and coordinate a series of cultural events such as preparing a group of Chinese learners for participation in the World Vision Song Contest, an annual college-wide event when teams of learners perform songs (and dance) in various second languages, festival celebrations such as Lunar New Year and the Moon Festival, working alongside Chinese language faculty on these and other themed activities. The language assistant will also actively participate in the program’s weekly, 1.5-hour long, Chinese table held in one of the college’s dining halls.
