Visiting Assistant Professor / Instructor of Chinese (Galesburg, Illinois)

Visiting Assistant Professor / Instructor of Chinese

Knox College invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor / Instructor of Chinese Language for the 2023-2024 academic year, starting on September 1, 2023. This position is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal. We invite applications from Chinese language specialists with a commitment to undergraduate education. We will also consider candidates with a specialty in a China-related field, who have language teaching experience and native or near-native proficiency in Mandarin and English.

The successful candidate will have a strong interest and experience in teaching language in a proficiency-oriented and inclusive program. Teaching responsibilities will be at the beginning and intermediate levels of Mandarin Chinese. Background in Chinese language acquisition or pedagogy preferred, but the College Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching Chinese at the college level. The normal teaching load is two courses per ten-week trimester (Fall, Winter, Spring), as well as contributing to support for advanced students in Chinese and related academic programs.

Knox is a diverse college with over 35% of the student body identifying as American students of color and more than 15% international students. Chinese faculty work hard to enroll a diverse group of students at all levels of instruction and successful candidates should be prepared to work to make Chinese courses appealing and welcoming to all of Knox’s students. Experience working with diverse populations of students and a commitment to teach successfully in a multicultural environment are expected.

Visiting faculty members at Knox are included in the professional and intellectual life of the College. The visiting faculty member will have a modest annual conference travel budget and access to research resources. Pay is commensurate with entry-level faculty positions at the College.
