The Department of Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Washington seeks to appoint a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor in modern Chinese. The initial appointment, starting Autumn Quarter 2023, is for three years, with the possibility of renewal. The successful applicant will be expected to teach modern Chinese language at all levels, to develop curricula and teaching materials, and to train and supervise teaching assistants. The University of Washington has a large and vibrant Chinese language program, including a Chinese major and minor, and is home to a Chinese Flagship Program. Faculty members engage in teaching, service, and, optionally, research; teaching professors are voting members of the faculty and have a career path that includes the ranks of Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor. This position is non-tenure-track and has a 9-month (September 16th – June 15th) service period.
Applicants must have at least an M.A. degree, or foreign equivalent, in teaching Chinese as a second language, foreign language teaching, or another relevant area. Native or near-native proficiency in Chinese, English fluency, and at least one year of experience teaching at the college or university level are required.
