The Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a three-year Contractually Limited Term Appointment (CLTA) in the area of Chinese Language. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, and is expected to begin on July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter, and end on June 30, 2025. An additional two-year renewal may be possible.
Applicants must have earned at least an MA degree in Chinese Language Education or a related field by the time of appointment with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. Native or near native fluency in Chinese is expected together with an excellent command of English. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance existing departmental strengths (www.eas.utoronto.ca). Candidates must demonstrate expertise in curriculum development, lecture preparation and delivery, and teaching Chinese as a second/foreign language in a degree granting program at the undergraduate level. Familiarity with North American pedagogical approaches is an asset. Experience in developing and delivering online materials/lectures and teaching all levels of Chinese is required. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and practices, and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, a strong statement of teaching philosophy, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including sample syllabi, sample lesson plans for different levels of teaching, links to videos of sample teaching, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.
Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

The Department of East Asian Studies is a multidisciplinary humanities department with established expertise in the histories, societies and cultures of East Asia. The department is home to an extremely popular undergraduate program and is strongly committed to graduate training. The department houses three in-demand language programs—Korean, Japanese and Chinese. Language enrolments are growing and reflect the diverse populations that inhabit the city of Toronto. The successful candidate will teach courses in the Chinese language (at any assigned undergraduate level) and assist with other activities in the Chinese language program.
