Middlebury College seeks an energetic and innovative person to serve as Academic Director of Middlebury's C.V. The American School in Japan

The American School in Japan seeks an experienced and dynamic teacher of Mandarin Chinese to plan and implement an extended Mandarin Chinese foreign language sequence, ending in AP Chinese Language and Culture. This full time position will begin in the 2009-10 school year with the expectation that the instructor will teach beginning levels in both middle school and high school while designing backward from AP Chinese Language and Culture to plan Chinese 2, 3 and 4.  In addition to a generous salary and benefits package, the school will pay a stipend of 20,000 yen per day for five pre-service days, August 10-14, 2009 for on-site work with the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. Senior instructors and graduate teaching assistants are needed for Beloit College's summer intensive Chinese language program (June 10 - August 7, 2009). In 2009, we expect to offer first- through fourth-year Mandarin Chinese. Each level, with an average enrollment of ten students, has one instructor and one graduate teaching assistant. Instructors collaborate with each other and the CLS director on curriculum, syllabi, and instruction. Duties include classroom teaching and evaluation, and assistance with organizing cultural activities for the program. Instructors will be expected to live on campus (single occupancy), eat meals with the students at lunch and dinner in the dining commons, and be available to students evenings and weekends.

Minimum qualifications for senior instructors include an M.A., teaching experience preferably in an immersion environment, native or near-native proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, and advanced proficiency in English. An advanced degree in Chinese, applied linguistics, or foreign language education is desirable. For graduate teaching assistants, an M.A. in progress is required. DEFINITION:
The Winter Intensive Language Program (WILP) provides beginning and intermediate level language instruction in an intensive format to approximately 60 undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals for two and a half weeks every winter.

Under supervision of the Language Program Coordinator and the WILP Director, language instructors provide intensive instruction in a communicative format with a focus on authentic materials for the Winter Intensive Language Program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaches assigned language and level half or full-time
- Collaborates with the language program coordinator, other instructors and teaching assistant to provide integration between curricular and extra-curricular programming as well as cultural relevance
- Prepares comprehensive syllabus including course description, objectives and material as well as assessment guidelines for students
- Prepares classes and provides instruction focusing on communicative language teaching and use of authentic materials
- Adjusts intensity of program as needed in collaboration with language program coordinator
- Keeps track of student progress by regularly implementing assessment mechanisms and completing grade reports as requested.

Lake Forest College seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Chinese Language and Literature to begin August 2009. This faculty member will play a key role in the Collegeâ s Asian Studies Program and be a member of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. The WL Coordinator will be responsible for the continued development and coordination of the Gr. 7 and 8 World Language program; as well as creating and implementing a new Elementary World Language program (FLES) for grades K-6. Applicants should have previous experience teaching any world language and working in an administrative role. Minimum of Bachelor's degree required.

Mandarin teachers will be responsible for helping to establish and implement a K-8 Mandarin program.
